First United Methodist Church
Hughes Springs, Texas
|Volume 4||April 2016|
A lot has been going on recently around the church. Probably the most obvious is the new sound and display control center that has been constructed in the back corner of the sanctuary. This construction was necessary for a couple of reasons. From the area where the sound system was previously operated, the sound technician could not hear the sound in the sanctuary adequately, which made it difficult to properly adjust the sound levels. Also, the lap top we had been using for projection finally gave out and we were forced to obtain a new computer to use for the projection of images. There was not sufficient space for the new computer in the old location. It is because of the new computer and the new display software that we are now able to display videos like the bell ringers that we showed on Easter Sunday and the little children explaining Easter that was shown last Sunday before the service. These videos were a demonstration of what is possible with the new system. As we go along, we will be able to integrate film clips, video, or other projected images with sound into the service. We have a lot to learn about the possibilities, and I am very happy to have this new capability.
I am very thankful to Cody McCain for heading up this project which has turned out really well. I am also very thankful for all of the people who donated their time, work, and expertise towards the project. Bruce Laigle built the platform and desk for the control center. They turned out better than I could have hoped, and it is absolutely beautiful work.
Also as part of that project, internet was wired to the new computer. The video that was played last Sunday was a YouTube video that was streamed directly from the internet. Alan Hill helped wire the internet to the computer. The new computer is also able to run three projectors so we now have a projector facing the rear wall of the
sanctuary. This enables those of us in the front to see what everyone else sees. With the new program it is also possible to put up a different message on the rear projector, which could be helpful in a number of ways like putting up lyrics to a song, putting up a sermon outline, or reminding me not to forget birthdays and anniversaries again. Alan Hill and Pete Mestas helped mount the rear projector from the ceiling and run the wiring. Jimmy “Hollywood” Humphrey donated and connected the electrical plug at the new desk. Cliff McCain ran the wiring beneath the church for the majority of this project.
The new computer is also capable of playing carillon music over loudspeakers in the church steeple. The sound of chimes that we have recently enjoyed is a function of the new computer and new speakers in the steeple that Troy Perry and Cody installed.
As part of this overall project, the organ has also been repaired. The crumbling organ speakers that were above the choir loft have been replaced and we are now able to enjoy wonderful organ music again. The last piece of this renovation project will be the placement of WiFi access points in the church which will make internet accessible throughout all of the building. This will not only be a convenience for our members, but will be a valuable resource for Sunday school classes, Bible studies, and ministries in our building. Nele Morrison has agreed to help set up these WiFi access points.
All of these people have donated their time, their expertise and their hard work. They have saved us a tremendous amount of money and provided a great blessing to us. If you get a chance, please let them know how much they are appreciated.
Blessings, Bro. Ed
