Let the Reading Begin

September 25, 2018

The Reading Buddies program has begun. I want to give a special thank you to those who signed up and read during the first week. It was fun to work with the little ones. Your efforts were greatly appreciated by the teachers and students.

This week we are taking a pause in our Bible Study to watch a movie, God’s Not Dead 3. I would like to encourage you to attend as this is a truly good movie that speaks to our modern-day world. The Study will resume next week as we start a new study called, “The Wesleyan Way.” The study was written by our conference bishop, Scott J. Jones. Before becoming a bishop, he had been a professor at Perkins School of Theology. The study looks at the foundation of a Wesleyan understanding of faith. The subtitle is, “A Faith That Matters.” This will be an 8-lesson study that will look at the way of salvation taught by the Bible, as understood by John Wesley and his brother Charles. They are the founders of our Methodist tradition. Come and join as together we examine our path to salvation.

This Sunday is a fifth Sunday, so we will be having a contemporary service with a meal to follow. Come and join the fellowship.

Calling all bar-b-quers!! The Last Sunday in October will be the day of the contest. If the weather co-operates, we will have the meal outside under the pavilion. Please contact the church office if you would like to participate or serve as a judge.

Remember to come and share the Lord’s Day together here at First United Methodist. If you are unable to attend, the service is streamed on our Facebook page, but we would love to see you here at service.

Gods blessings be with you.

Worship Committee

July 24, 2018

Gods blessings be with you.

This week we had a very positive, very productive worship committee meeting. We looked over the surveys that had been turned in and examined things we would like to try. Several changes were suggested and are being tried. At my request, I will no longer be doing the announcements. I made this request earlier in the week before the surveys had been brought together. This is the habit in most churches I have attended. The passing of the peace and holding hands during the closing benediction are going to be included in the service. We also looked at events to come. There will be a barbeque cook off at the end of October and a Christmas cookie event some time in December.

I wish to stop a rumor that I heard. AS with must rumors, there is little or no basis in fact. I heard that I was beat up or beat down in the worship committee meeting. Was someone at a different meeting than I was? This did not happen!!! I found the meeting affirming and positive. I do not know where this rumor started, but I want it to STOP now.

Are you ready for Ice Cream? After the service on Sunday we will be having our Homemade Ice Cream event together with a picnic style meal. Come join the fun. I will write more about this next week.

Remember to come and share the Lord’s Day together here at First United Methodist. If you are unable to attend, the service is streamed on our Facebook page, but we would love to see you here at service.

Gods blessings be with you.

Who knew that scripture could taste so good? Thank you to Cathy Zachry and Amy Laubenberg for bringing scripture cakes on Sunday. It really added something special to the day. The time of fellowship between Sunday School and service time really came alive with this event. Thank you to Frances Perry for bringing the idea to the worship committee and bringing the idea to life.

It is getting close to that time again, choir is going to start working on the music for Christmas. I do not know about you, but I have missed the fellowship and the fun that we share together. Let’s join our voices together in song in praise of our Lord and Savior.

Please make sure to fill out the survey concerning worship. We would love to hear from you as we try to make our worship even more meaningful. You can turn it in at church or bring it to the church office.

Are you getting ready for ice cream? This fifth Sunday we will be having our picnic style potluck and homemade ice cream competition. Come join the fun and fellowship.

Remember to come and share the Lord’s Day together here at First United Methodist. If you are unable to attend, the service is streamed on our Facebook page, but we would love to see you here at service.

Summer Fun

Gods blessings be with you.

Did you enjoy the rockets red glare on the 4th? This year was the third time I attended the fireworks display at the high school and I have enjoyed it every time. It was fun to sing the patriotic songs on Sunday. I want to thank those who decorated the alter rail, it really added to the service.

This month starts my third year here in Hughes Springs. Dianna, Amy, and I have settled in and are still enjoying the pace of life in a small town. We really do not miss the trouble with driving that we had in Katy, Tx.

Are all the ice cream makers getting ready for the 29th? Have you been getting out your recipes? Do not forget to let the church office know if you plan to take part in the competition. Also, we are looking for three individuals to act as judges. It will be fun that Sunday. The meal will be a picnic style, potluck.

Movie times have been going well this summer. It has been a time of fun, inspiration, and fellowship. If you have not been to one yet, come join the party, we would love to see you there.

Remember to come and share the Lord’s Day together here at First United Methodist. If you are unable to attend, the service is streamed on our Facebook page, but we would love to see you here at service.

Father’s Day was Happy

Gods blessings be with you.

Hope your Father’s Day was a happy one. It sure was here at the church. A Special thank you to those who helped to make it so. There was Betty and Allen singing solos for us, Debbie for scanning the photos in, Nicole created our PowerPoint slide presentation, Carly for getting the gifts to fathers together, and the young people for doing the delivery to the Dads. All of you helped to make the day special.

The movie days at the church are going well. Come enjoy the fun. You never know what snacks might be brought to the showing. This week we will be watching, The Grace Card.

Don’t forget the Civil Rights training that will be done during the food pantry time. This needs to be done every year to keep us set-up with the East Texas Food Bank.

God be with those of you who travel this summer. May he watch over you and help you to find your way home.

Remember to come and share the Lord’s Day together here at First United Methodist. If you are unable to attend, the service is streamed on our Facebook page, but we would love to see you here at service.

Summer is Here

Gods blessings be with you.

Sorry for having missed a few weeks, but with preparing for Annual Conference and attending Annual Conference I lost track of time. The change in my day off from Saturday to Monday has thrown my routine a little off as well.

Well, Summer is now here. The children are out of school and vacations are being planned. Please be careful as you drive, there are more little ones running around with school being out. Also, as you go on your vacations, drive safely, have fun, and know that prayers follow you as you go. Don’t forget your church as you travel. You will be able to find us each Sunday on the Church’s Facebook page live feed.

Summer also brings our Christian video night on Wednesdays. The first showing went well and those who came had fun and saw a wholesome movie. Look in the Newsletter for the schedule of coming attractions. Remember the popcorn is provided, but unless you want water you will need to bring your own drinks. If you would like, you can bring snacks to share. Come enjoy the fun. A Special thank you to Cathy Zachry for making the curtains in the fellowship hall that make viewing a lot more pleasant.

Remember to come and share the Lord’s Day together here at First United Methodist. If you are unable to attend, the service is streamed on our Facebook page, but we would love to see you here at service.
